Redfoot

It is my understanding that both the Big Sandy Kinnit and the Big South Fork Kinnit were, at least in part, formed from the Redfoot Kinnit. Unfortunately due to the time period, illiteracy, and isolation, most recorded information on the Redfoot Kinnit is entirely lost, if it ever existed at all. This will serve as the Redfoot Kinnit archive. I will add all documents I can find mentioning the Redfoot Kinnit or people. We know the last documented member of the Redfoot Kin that carried the surname is Julius Redfoot and his daughters, while it seems Julius and all his descendants simply vanished after 1810. Any information available on the Melungeon Redfoot Kinnit or Surname is appreciated and welcome. Please email feelinbabylon@gmail.com

Julius Redfoot on the 1810 Census, 8 lines from the bottom.

Newspaper article that mentions the since gone Redfoot Kinnit, describing Mrs Beatrice Stanfill as 7/8 Cherokee and 1/8 Redfoot. This newspaper article is from Whitley County KY, in 1966. This tells us the Redfoot people were still known about in their homeland region in the late 20th century. Melungeon was often considered pejorative at this time, so using Kinnit names would’ve been more respectful journalism. Finding any information on Mrs Beatrice Stanfill has proven rather unfruitful.
